OSCAR NOMINATIONS 2023!

According to AskGamblers, “searches for ‘stream Everything Everywhere All at Once’ exploded 667%, worldwide as of 24^th of January 2023 after the Academy Award nominations were released with Everything Everywhere All at Once racking up eleven nominations – more than any other movie nominated” in the following categories:

Best Picture
Best Director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert)
Best Lead Actress (Michelle Yeoh)
Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan)
Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu)
Best Original Screenplay
Best Film Editing
Best Original Song
Best Costume Design
Best Original Score

Following with 9 nominations each for Best Picture were “The Banshees of Inisherin” the little Irish film which wowed critics, and “All Quiet On the Western Front” based on the 1929 novel and born again on Netflix. “Avatar: The Way of Water ” surprised no one in this category, along with “Tar” and Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans.” I was surprised and glad that the crowd-pleasing “Top Gun: Maverick” made it in, along with “Women Talking” and “Elvis,” but disappointed that the uneven and overlong satire “Triangle of Sadness” was included.

I love the Best Supporting Actress nominees especially first-timer Jamie Lee Curtis for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and Angela Bassett for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” For Best Actress, I was surprised but love that Ana de Armas in the controversial “Blonde” was nominated, and surprised that Andrea Riseborough in the little-seen “To Leslie” was nominated while Danielle Deadwyler in “Till,” and Viola Davis in “The Woman King” were left out.

The biggest snub of all? NO WOMEN DIRECTORS. Not Sarah Polley for her film “Women Talking” which was nominated. Not Gina Prince-Bythewood for “The Woman King” a sprawling epic about a little known chapter of African history which was left out altogether. But also James Cameron for his nominated blockbuster “Avatar: The Way Of Water.”

Now movie fans aren’t necessarily academy voters whose votes alone will be tallied and revealed SUNDAY March 12, 2023 on ABC at the 95th Oscars hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. And sometimes in the Oscar universe, numbers can be misleading– multi nominations don’t always add up to awards. Because I love movies, I hope everyone sees everything all at once — to stir up conversation and encourage people talking. So here’s the complete list of nominees.
