What to do on a cold & rainy week? I’ve got you covered: here’s what to see at the movies! Watch Trailer HERE!
Take the whole family to see THE SHEEP DETECTIVES. Oh my goodness. I may never eat another lamb chop again. THIS IS THE MOST ADORABLE movie of the summer with a STELLAR cast, a Miss Marple-like mystery to solve, life lessons to stir your soul, and SHEEP!!!! Lovely, fluffy, funny sheep.
I started laughing at the opening credits when the MGM LION opened his mouth to roar and let out a big “bahhh!!” Hugh Jackman stars as George Hardy a shepherd who reads murder mysteries to his flock every night– until one night he is murdered!! The sheep are immediately on the case trying to help the local constabulary — one doltish but endearing policeman–officer Tim Derry (Nicholaus Braun) who clearly needs guidance. Other humans include Emma Thompson as Lydia Harbottle the murdered shepherd’s brassy lawyer, Molly Gordon (“The Bear”) as the shepherd’s daughter Rebecca, and Nicholas Galitzine (“Purple Hearts”) as a hapless reporter who’s stumbled into a huge story in this tiny English village of Denbrook.
You’ll recognize these sheep –and perhaps their voices–immediately as distinctly human personalities:Lily the smartest sheep in the flock (Julia Louis Dreyfus), Sebastian a cynical old loner with a gravelly voice who’s seen dark days (Bryan Cranston), Mopple, the wisest sheep who remembers the past and gives everyone perspective(Chris O’Dowd). Patrick Stewart voices the aristocratic Sir Ritchfield, Regina Hall is Cloud, the sheep with the fluffiest fleece, Laraine Newman who tips over at the slightest little shock, and Brett Goldstein in a dual role as Ronnie and Reggie a pair of head-butting rams!
As the mystery twists and turns, everyone rises to the occasion or gets their comeuppance, and the murderer is uncovered. But it’s life’s weightier mysteries that are plumbed here and yield the most satisfying insights about mortality, memory, loss and grief, healing and trauma, belief systems, identity, diversity, power, and belonging. It’s a tender film in a toxic time with much to say about goodness, about what shepherd is leading the flock, and what sheep can do if a shepherd goes missing.
ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES OF THE YEAR. Hoof it to the theater.
