I have always LOVED cats. I wrote my first letter to an editor when I was 10 years old defending the intelligence of cats vs. that of dogs (Love them both–VERY different creatures). I know a lot about cats but I DID NOT KNOW what was in this documentary, AMERICAN CATS: THE GOOD, THE BAD, & THE CUDDLY.

The film somehow manages to be both entertaining and horrifying as it documents the mutilation and pain involved in the dark side of declawing which I had always thought was a harmless and convenient way to keep cats from tearing up your furniture if you cannot (city cats) or do not let your cats outside. I was shocked to discover this is NOT SO and I am spreading the word. Here’s a glimpse of the film which will be followed by a LIVE Q & A. Details below!

In the words of the filmmakers, “Cat declawing is an inhumane and unnecessary surgical procedure that is banned in most of the world’s industrialized countries. However, it is both legal and all-too-common in the United States. Why is that? British-American correspondent Amy Hoggart (“Full Frontal with Samantha Bee”) investigates the controversy that pits ethically-minded veterinarians, activists, and pet owners against a powerful industry lobby that promotes and profits from a surgical operation that can have profoundly negative physical and psychological effects on our feline friends.

Hoggart navigates a maze of misinformation that characterizes declawing as a benign intervention to thwart a cat’s natural instinct to scratch and claw. Surely, there are less gratuitously gruesome ways to curb unwanted behavior short of amputating your cat’s toes, aren’t there? Indeed, there are. American Cats is a satirical but thought-provoking documentary that challenges the ethical implications of our choices. The film’s message appeals to our common sense and – hopefully – our better angels when it comes to making healthcare decisions for our feline companions.”

On Thursday May 29th at 8pm ET/5pm PT, AMERICAN CATS will PREMIERE VIRTUALLY  in the US with a livestream discussion following the film with lead subject Dr. Jennifer Conrad and moderated by Danielle Bays (Cat Protection & Policy, Humane World).
