The critics have spoken– and women ruled the Boston Society of Film Critics awards!

“Little Women,” much of it shot in and around Concord and Boston, topped the list of winners at the 39th installment of the BSFC awards, 2019. We gathered all day Sunday, December 15 to vote the best in 15 categories, five of which went to “Little Women”: BEST FILM,  BEST ACTRESS/Saoirse Ronan, BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS/Laura Dern, BEST ORIGINAL SCORE, and BEST ENSEMBLE. The fifth big screen adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved tale of the March family has been re-energized by writer/director Gerwig who brought an all-star cast to town also including Meryl Streep, Emma Watson, Chris Cooper, Timothee Chalamet, and Florence Pugh. The film opens Christmas day and I will review it then. (Hint: I LOVED it.)

Best FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM and BEST DIRECTOR went to this year’s winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, “Parasite,” a subversive masterpiece of humor, horror, and social commentary and its South Korean writer/director Bong Joon Ho.

BEST ACTOR went to Adam Sandler as a hyper, seat of his pants gambling jeweler going for the big win in “Uncut Gems.”  Writer/director Quentin Tarantino won BEST SCREENPLAY for “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood”  and Brad Pitt took the award for BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR.

Now for the Boston Online Film Critics Association awards–  there was quite a bit of overlap. The BOFCA  chose “Parasite” as BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM, but also BEST PICTURE. Their awards for BEST ACTOR,  SUPPORTING ACTOR, DIRECTOR, SCREENPLAY, ENSEMBLE, and EDITING  for “The Irishman” coincided with the BSFC awards, but the online critics voted Lupita Nyong’o BEST ACTRESS for “Us,” and BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Florence Pugh for “Little Women.”
