I have never understood what the color of a person’s skin has to do with a person’s character or worth. Color might indicate where someone or their ancestors originate; color most certainly signals how they have been treated in our pre-dominantly white culture. On MLK Day 2021, when a racial reckoning shakes loose yet another layer of our awareness, I want to share a song written by a 13 year-old from Jacksonville, Florida named Keedron Bryant and his mother. Not only is this young man a remarkable singer, but what he’s singing is a soul-piercing call to our shared humanity. The performance has gone viral. You may have already heard it. I heard it again today introduced by Whoopi Goldberg on THE VIEW. I hear it each time as a call to see ourselves in each other, a call from someone, like me, who just wants to live.
