The 34th Annual Elliot Norton Awards Ceremony is set for Monday May 23 at Boston’s Citi Shubert Theatre and will honor Award-winning actress Mary Louise Wilson! Here’s her hilarious acceptance speech after receiving Broadway’s 2007 Tony Award as best featured actress in a musical for her performance in “Grey Gardens”:
The curtain goes up at 7PM and the ceremony will feature nominated musical performances, the awarding of The Elliot Norton Prize for Sustained Excellence, a post-ceremony party, and surprise appearances and performances. The awards are presented annually by The Boston Theater Critics Association (BTCA) (Don Aucoin, Jared Bowen, Terry Byrne, Carolyn Clay, Nick Dussault, Iris Fanger, Joyce Kulhawik, Kilian Melloy, Bob Nesti, and Ed Siegel) to honor the outstanding productions, directors, designers, and performers that audiences have seen on Greater Boston area stages throughout the year.
As president of the BTCA I speak for all of us when I say that we stand in awe of Mary Louise Wilson‘s talent and achievements, and applaud her enduring career as a Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning actress, singer, comedienne, author, teacher, star of her just released documentary, ‘She’s The Best Thing In It,’ and her tour-de-force performance as Letitia Peabody Primrose in last year’s Broadway revival of ‘On the Twentieth Century.’ It is an honor to honor her!
Special and honored guests at the awards comprise a who’s who of distinguished artists who have graced Boston’s stages, including: Lea DeLaria, Olympia Dukakis, Chita Rivera, Tommy Tune, Al Pacino, Edward Albee, Brian Dennehy, August Wilson, Julie Harris, Sir Ian McKellen, Lynn Redgrave, and Jason Robards.
Mary Louise Wilson was Big Edie in Grey Gardens (Tony Award), appeared in Amy Herzog’s 4000 Miles at Lincoln Center (Obie Award), Fraulein Schneider in the Broadway revival of Cabaret (Tony Award nomination), and Mrs. Morehouse in the Roundabout Theater’s The Women and most recently Letitia Primrose in Roundabout Theater’s On The Twentieth Century. She portrayed fashion icon Diana Vreeland in Full Gallop which she co-wrote with Mark Hampton (Obie, Drama Desk awards). Other recent Off-Broadway plays include Love, Loss And What I Wore, Bosoms And Neglect at the Signature and Beard Of Avon at NYTW (Drama Desk nomination). Recent television appearances include: “Mozart in the Jungle,” “Devious Maids,” “The Sopranos,” “Louie CK” and “Nurse Jackie.” Film work includes: Nebraska, The Humbling, Step Mom, Klute, Green Card, She-Devil, Pet Semetary, Zelig and The Money Pit.
The Elliot Norton Awards are named for the Dean of American Theater Critics, who for 48 years was a drama critic for Boston newspapers. From 1958 to 1982, Elliot Norton hosted “Elliot Norton Reviews” on WGBH (PBS) television. Mr. Norton remained an active supporter of the dramatic arts until his death in 2003 at the age of 100!
